Ice fishing in the Heartland Lakes area is winding down, but there is still plenty of opportunity to catch fish!
Ice thickness is varying greatly from lake to lake and although many lakes have about 20” of ice, vehicle travel is NOT advised! ATV’s and snowmobile’s are still able to get out so long as the shoreline ice hasn’t pulled away. Use extreme caution and include safety gear when heading out on our lakes.
The crappie, sunfish and perch bite has been fantastic as the fish are very aggressively feeding during this late ice period. Most fish have progressed into shallow water, anywhere from 4-12 feet and are situating high in the water column, often times just below the ice.
Now is a great time to forget about live bait and pair small jigs and spoons with soft plastic tails.
