Fishing in the Park Rapids is heating up!
Surface temperatures are rising and so are angler’s expectations. Most lakes do not have docks or porta-jons installed yet, but that will happen over the next few weeks. Since anglers can only target panfish right now, the key is finding small bays, sometimes only large enough for one boat. These shallow, isolated areas accommodate fish almost immediately after the lakes are ice free. Using a small jig on 4-6lb test line, swim a small jig 1/16th oz or less, slowly over existing and new growth vegetation. Another option is to use a small float to suspend the jig and add a crappie minnow or waxworm. If the water is very shallow, the bobber set up is best because to do so with a plain jig would require you to retrieve too fast. Changing to a lighter jig won’t offer the weight needed for any distance with a cast, so adding a float is a great solution. Anglers who enjoy the art of fly fishing also have an ideal situation to experience a lot of activity!
