Fishing in the Park Rapids area is experiencing the diversity of both ice fishing and open water angling.
Last weekend marked the 2022 stream trout opener. Those who braved the elements saw mixed success, but the stream fishing will continually improve as the water warms. Ice anglers are still able to get out, many on snowmobiles and ATVs, though extreme caution is imperative. Most lakes have about 20” of ice, though not his can vary greatly near shorelines, along previously plowed ice roads and of course near current. Those venturing out ice fishing are having great eyes for crappies, sunfish and perch in shallow water, anywhere from 3-8 feet. During this period, panfish typically gravitated toward the ice and it’s not uncommon to catch nice fish 1-2 feet below the ice.
