Jack Frost has a firm grip on northern Minnesota’s lakes and the ice is getting thicker by the minute. Over a foot of snow is on the ground and the snowmobile trail groomers are already out on the main trails. The snow did cause flooding on a few of our local lakes temporarily, but the recent extreme cold has refrozen the water on top of the ice. While reports of ice thickness will vary from lake to lake depending upon size, currents, springs and other factors, we have an overall average of 10 inches of clear ice. LureTech’s™ Wolfie™ tungsten jigs tipped with a wax worm have been bringing the crappies to the top side of the ice. The most success has been found over 14 to 20 feet of water near cabbage weed stands the right before and after dark. There have been many pictures on social media of fresh trophy size walleye catches over the past week and the standard hook, split shot and rainbow minnow is bringing the most success. Remember that no ice is safe ice! Make sure that you know where the currents and springs are before heading out on to the lake. Stop by and see us for the most up to date ice, snow and fishing reports. We look forward to seeing you soon!
