Fall is finally here, and the big fish are on the chomp.
The fish are staging in first ice areas (which are similar to early summer locations). A live bait rig or jig with a large rainbow chub worked slowly along the remaining weed lines or deep mid lake structures like underwater points and deep holes in the 45-60 ft range. Nice sized pike can be caught trolling large spinner baits or large crank baits over the tops of shallow weed flats near shore in the 6’-12’ depth ranges. Crappies and bluegills are split down the middle. Look to shallow “warmer” weed beds for the bluegills or you can find them with the deep basin crappies cruising mud flats in the 20-30 ft. range. Large schools of crappies can also be found off steep shoreline breaks plunging into deep holes in the 40-50 ft. range. You can find them suspended with your electronics and catch them with any kind of jigging presentation.
