Heartland State Trail
Park Rapids Trailhead - 303 Mill St, , MN
The Heartland State Trail is a 49-mile multiple-use paved trail stretching between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. The Heartland Trail was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in the country, an asphalt ribbon laid on a level abandoned railroad grade. Along the 27 miles between Park Rapids and Walker, there is a parallel natural surface trail for horseback riding and mountain biking. Trail users pass through northern hardwood forests and numerous lakes, rivers, and streams. During the winter months, the Heartland State Trail remains popular among snowmobile riders and cross-country skiers. Trailside parks are located at Park Rapids, Dorset, Nevis, Akeley, and Walker.
