Park Rapids Area Fishing Report

Fishing activity in the Park Rapids area was very good over the past week. Anglers reported good catches on numerous bodies of water for walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish.
Walleye action has been good on some of the larger bodies of water while anglers troll crankbaits on the weedline edges. Salmo Hornets in hot perch and dace colors are the best bet trolled at speeds from 1.2-2.2 mph. While activity peaks during the twilight hours, mid-day action has been admirable as well.
Bass action has been outstanding, primarily for largemouth. Depths from only a couple feet out to about 24 feet have been productive depending upon both the lake and presentation. Live bait options have performed better in the deeper environments while soft plastic baits like Northland Tackle’s Brush Beaver have gotten more attention in shallow water.
Northern pike activity has been good, especially on fast moving artificial baits in mid- to deep water. Swimbaits, inline spinners and deep diving crankbaits both casted and trolled are putting the most pike in the boat.
Panfish action is at a peak, with big crappies and bluegills eager to bite. No live bait is necessary to land a slab crappie or behemoth bluegill. Try out Northland Tackle’s Mimic Minnow or local hot lure Irv’s Magic Jig in the 16th –oz. size. Simply cast the jig out, let it sink on a semi-slack line and watch for any twitches or tightening of your fishing line. If so, set the hook! Look for both bluegill and crappie in 8-16 feet of water along weed-covered breaks.
On a side note, the natural forage on many of the local lakes has been in abundance, much more so compared to typical years. As the year progresses and those schools of minnows dwindle due to natural predation, the fish become even more likely to take your bait. In other words, each day continues to better the last in fishing success in the Park Rapids area.
