Area Neighborhoods

Ponsford

Ponsford was settled about 1880 and named for Orville D. Ponsford, an early settler. For some time after the first settlement, roads were mere trails and kept open with great difficulty. Snow shoes were used by almost everyone and "many a sack of flour was carried weary miles on the shoulders of a man trudging through trackless snow." Hearty outdoor spirit is still at home here even today, because just south of this Ojibwe community is Smoky Hills State Forest. Ponsford shares its place on the prairie with Pine Point, where the White Earth Chippewa Tribe dedicated a new school in the fall of 2002. Pine Point also hosts an annual community powwow.
